A feasibility project for a cafe amongst the trees and foliage, this project was commissioned by a retired couple looking for a new project near their home.
The whole project was conceived as a temporary structure and developed as a series of stacked shipping containers which would be clad using charred timber from the local woodland. The dark tones would allow the building to visually recede into the background, keeping the eye focused on the foliage and maintaining the existing aura of tranquility on the site
This project allowed us to develop a totally site-specific yet commercial intervention. The arboricultural report and natural landscape was the main driver for the siting of the café and the associated landscaping/access routes, ensuring that the fewest trees would be affected and that the sense of place was retained. In addition to design, we developed a detailed programmatic brief with the client to help form their business plan and model.
